Drug-Resistant Germs

The outlook for drug resistant germs means a threat of new diseases.
Hospitals throughout the world are faced with the threat of new diseases, due to the most potent antibiotics on the market, are becoming weaker. Many germs are resistant to every known drug. The spread of drug-resistant microorganisms have the infectious disease experts concerned.
There are presently more than 100 antibiotics on the market. In the past, doctors have been able to use them as alternates. The fear is that there will come a day when there will not be any alternates to prescribe. Their concern is for patients who receive antibiotics to treat diseases caused by drug-resistant germs, is the inconvenience and financial loss that ends in no cures.

Accepting Responsibility for Your Health is Necessary

Health Information for Nutrition by Ellen J. Barrier

In our daily life being able to accept responsibility for our judgment is absolutely necessary.
We start with our health, and character. It is our decision to choose the food we eat, whether we want to exercise and how we behave toward others.  A healthy attitude reduces stress that can cause body aches and discomfort.
Eating the right food and getting the nutrition needed for your body to function properly and exercising is making a rational judgment  by accepting the responsibility for your health. Having self-control is important.  For Example, a vegetable salad with lots of shredded cheese and dressing staked  on top is an unhealthy salad.
When  I get a box of chocolates, I will eat 1 or 2 pieces of the candy. I do not eat the whole box of chocolates.
If we allow ourselves to eat without having limits as to how much we should eat, we risk allowing the food to control us. Poor health is the result of poor health habits, caused by poor judgment.
How much we eat and how the food is prepared is important to our health.

Meat that is broiled, baked, or grilled, are preferable to me for good health. Steamed vegetables, fresh fruits, cereal, and nuts are good food sources. In the book, How to Trust God When All Other Resources Have Failed  Chapter 8 NUTRITION God’s Way For Mankind, the reader will find the following information.
Recommended Food Groups For Proper Nutrition

The Anatomy of the Human Body

This diagram of the human body shows a range of organs that are important to human anatomy. They include the brain, heart, lungs, spleen, muscles, stomach, kidneys and more.

The human body is built like a complicated machine that only its creator completely understands its operation; and has the infinite wisdom to rebuild it. It is extraordinarily professionally created.

Post - Traumatic Stress Disorder

The etiology of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is related to a traumatic experience that happened to an individual or is one they witnessed. If an individual has experienced a traumatic event, such as a near death situation or has been in a situation such as a soldier fighting on a battle field where psychological trauma occurs, it can have a serious affect on that individual's mind and health. For many years after wars, our soldiers have informed of the symptoms of PTSD, but they weren't taken seriously. Many have suffered silently. They felt that no one cared. And who can blame them? Also, in some cases of near drowning and sexual assaults, some of these individuals have reported symptoms of PTSD. This is a very serious health condition that many people suffer from.

Children Behaving Badly

Ellen J. Barrier/
Author/Spirituality Counselor

Somewhere along the path of parenting, many parents of today, have neglected their responsibility to teach and discipline their children. The stories written below will prove my statement to be true.

Student Rejected by University Due to Murder Charges

A 42-year-old female was bludgeoned to death by her 14-year-old daughter. After the killing, the girl and her boyfriend tried to make the death appear to have been a suicide by sticking a carving knife into the side of her mother's neck. The number of blows delivered to the victim's head by her daughter were said to have been at least 13. The daughter reportedly took the time to wipe up pools of blood in the kitchen.

Daughter's Profile:
IQ: 150
Honor Society Member, tennis team co-captain, tutor of underprivileged kids.
At the time of her mother's death the 14-year-old girl was nearly a straight A student and was the head of her student government class.

Mother's Profile:
The mother reportedly was drunk at the time she was murdered.

Court's Decision:
The judge presiding over this case, placed the girl in juvenile detention for a few months, then granted her permission to relocate and begin a new life. She reportedly, lived with an aunt until the age of 16, and moved into her own apartment supporting herself on a modest  trust fund.

Education continued:
At the age of 19-years-old, the university that this student applied to, had accepted her application, but withdrew it after someone sent them a newspaper clipping  about the killing. A question on the application asked if a student had ever been on probation? She being the applicant, had been on probation until the age of 18, as a condition of pleading no contest in the killing of her mother.

Attorney:
Her attorney stated, she was not obligated to disclose something that happened when she was a minor.

The Student's Views About Her Past History:
"I deal with this tragedy everyday on a personal level.  It serves no good purpose for anyone else to dredge up the pain of my childhood".

*Another university accepted the 19-year-old female.

Part 2: "The Mirror of Society"
This is a true story: Student Rejected by University Due to Murder Charges
Location and date where this event occurred, will remain in the book.

Questions for Discussion:

1. Does it appear that the 19-year-old was given special treatment by the judge?
2. Do you feel that she was ever punished for the murder of her mother?
3. Does it appear that she is remorseful for the crime she committed?
4. Should she have explained this incident to the university at the time she
    submitted her application? Why?

5. The attorney for the 19-year-old stated, she was not obligated to disclose the
information involving the killing of her mother, because it happened when she
was a minor. Do you agree with the attorney? Why?

6.  Was the university's decision not to allow the student to attend college there,
      justifiable? Why?

I'm going to address stress, because  it is the cause of depression and anxiety. It  is a mental or emotional pressure within the mind that is the root cause of mental disorders. As a nurse I worked with both young and older patients who suffer from mental disorders. Many of the medications, dosage had to be increased due to after a period of time, the present dosage no longer helped. Then there were times when the patient became over medicated and became too drowsy. And of course, some of the medications didn't help any.

Symptoms of Depression:                                 Symptoms of Anxiety:
Worrying                                                              Worrying, irritability
Low energy level                                                  Fear for no reason
Low sexual interest                                              Pounding heart
Forcing oneself to get things done                       Frequent head aches
Irritability                                                               Trouble sleeping
Poor concentration                                              Restlessness
Feeling of hopelessness                                      Poor concentration

Obesity in Childhood

What's Really Causing the Childhood Obesity Epidemic?

There are preventative measures that parents can take to prevent childhood obesity. Three things that can be watched closely are, diet, exercise and scheduling. These things should begin when the child is brought home from the hospital. The one thing to keep in mind is every time the baby cries, he or she is not hungry.

Overfeeding is not healthy.  Sticking to a schedule is very important in the early years of childhood, because it prevents snacking in between meals in later years that can lead to overeating. Most family’s meals are Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Preventive measures to take to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Diet:
Bread
Cereal
Fruit
Milk & Dairy
Meat (lean meat, poultry, fish)
Vegetables (dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, dry beans, peas, and other nutritionals such as corn and potatoes) Teaching a child to eat in small portions is very important. If they want more after eating the smaller portion, they should be able to have more. Overeating and too many snacks between meals are problems to avoid. A few healthy snacks between meals should be allowed if the child is hungry.

Exercise:
From crib to adult years exercise is very important. When babies are placed on a quilt on the floor, they can move around easier, and have closer contact with the parents and family. This aids in crawling and walking a lot sooner. There are many things parents can do to help their children get the proper exercise they need.

Bicycling
Dancing
Gymnastics
Hockey
Jogging
Jumping rope
Playing balls
Soccer
Swinging
Swimming
Tennis
Tricycle
Walking

Scheduling:

Having a set time for each meal is very important, it prevent snacking before meals that can prevent eating the most important food. If a child is not hungry during the meal because they are filled from snacks, they aren’t going to eat, or if they are encouraged to eat, this will add extra calories and will lead to weight gain.  And it sends a message to the brain to eat, even though the child isn’t hungry, that is carried through teenage years and into adult years.

How we prepare meals and scheduling are examples we set for our children.  Keeping a cookie jar and candy in the house was never something I have done. It was not a traditional thing in my childhood. As parents, we pass much of our cultural traditions to our children. We have to be careful to determine what is good and what is not. I have shared with you the things that have worked for my family and myself, that prevented obesity in our childhood and in our adult years.

"Can You Love Without Forgiveness?" was written by Pamela Nunley.  She noted in this article the importance of forgiveness. She gives detail information on the whole meaning of love, from a biblical standpoint of view and from the human emotion of passion. Pamela explains the struggle many have with forgiveness and the need to ask for spiritual intervention, in the book titled, POWER!

Noting the relationship between health and  forgiveness, Pamela states, " If you are in distress where you feel like everything you do turns out wrong, and you're sick and tired of being sick and tired you are just the person I am writing to."

Margine Mims, gives us a deeper understanding of what its like to live with a deep depression due to stress she suffered having suffered the loss of her husband, son, and grandson, who passed away within short periods of time. She gives details of the struggle she had with her health due to this metal disorder, and how she overcame it.

Gout is a metabolic disease. The symptoms are acute, and are those of arthritis. They are noted as inflammation of the joints. This disease usually begins in the knee or foot. Some Biblical Scholars believed that King Asa suffered from a serious illness of gout. He received medical treatment for the disease, but later it took his life. It was said that his affliction was in his foot.

According to studies, Several different metabolic normalities may cause
Hyperuricemia. Excessive uric acid in blood and deposits of urates of sodium in and around joints are noted. It is recommended that those who suffers from gout, should drink plenty of fluids to prevent their urine from becoming concentrated.

If stress isn't controlled, it can lead to psychological and physical harm.

nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox nor his ass, nor anything
         that is thy neighbor’s.
          Exodus 20:17 (K.J.V)

II.   The Damage Caused by Adultery:

a.     To engage in extra-marital affairs can cause transmittable diseases to spread
        to others.
b.     There is a danger of causing physical harm to others due to unfaithfulness in
        a marriage.
c.     It destroys trust and weakens the relationship between the husband and wife.

d.     Destroys relationships with family members.

There have been  incidents, where a spouse  found out about an affair between their spouse and another individual - either killed the two individuals or one of them.
Often times, it breakup families –the ones who suffer the most are the children. They have to learn to live without both parents in the same home, watching them grow, and doing things with them, the way marriage was designed by God, to be.

Teachers are able to see the negative affect of an extra-marital affair on a student. It interferes with academic performance in school.  It is never just between the husband and wife. It is between the husband, wife and children.

God’s Example for Parents:

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.  Genesis 18: 19 (K.J.V)

God’s Promise to Men & Women:

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that ye may boldly say, The Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
Hebrews 13:5, 6 (K.J.V)

Note:  More than likely, every marriage will face the temptation, to submit to an extra-marital affair. None of us are immune to temptations. However, there is a stiff penalty to pay. God will not accept the notion, this is something that we can't control.

Sleep Apnea

Ellen J. Barrier

Sleep Apnea, is a serious condition to many like myself, who have experienced it.
This is a condition that robs an individual of their sleep. And can be life threatening. It can cause death to occur during sleep. Not only does this condition occur in older individuals, it occurs in the very young. In the young, it is oftentimes called nightmares.

Apnea as pertaining to breathing, is the cessation of breathing, usually of a temporary nature. It may result from reduction in stimuli, to the respiratory center as in over-breathing, in which carbon dioxide content of the blood is reduced; from failure of the respiratory center, to  discharge impulses as occurs when the breath is held voluntarily. Or during Cheyne-Stokes Respiration.

This condition should be taken seriously, especially, in those who have medical conditions such as arteriosclerosis, meningitis, coma, heart and kidney diseases, and brain injury, when a concussion has resulted.

Apnea has been noted in perfectly healthy children, and in people of older ages during sleep. Which is why it got the name “Sleep Apnea“. The symptoms are characterized by a gradual increase in breathing rate, until it ends in a gasp followed - by a gradual decrease until respiration ceases, then it begins again. Also, respiration can gradually increase in force and frequency and then suddenly cease.

Another name for apnea, is Respiration Cheyne-Stokes. Breathing in which respirations gradually increase in rapidity and volume until they reach climax, then gradually subside and cease entirely for 5 to 50 seconds, then they begin again. It is usually a forerunner of death, but may last for several months or a few days. This type of respiration is not necessarily associated with disease. It is observed in normal persons during sleep, especially older people. And has been noted in some people while visiting areas of moderately high altitude.

From my very own experience with sleep apnea, I know that during periods of stress, or fatigue, the attacks will become very frequent and severe. I found  a way to keep the attacks at minimum, and moderate, by exercising & relaxation. And learning how to deal with stress.

Mental Health: Depression; Psychosis; Stress

Ellen J. Barrier

The first thing I will address is Mental Hygiene. It is the science of maintaining healthy mental, and emotional responses - and preventing psychosis. I will address psychosis later. When an individual experience any kind of  loss or a traumatic change in their life, the mental capacity of that individual, is deeply altered. The first response of every individual, is to search for the answer within themselves, to fix the problem. Within all of us lies emotions: In time of a broken relationship, the first response to fix the problem, is often the wrong one.
Because understandable there is disappointment, anger, and hurt. The physical part of us, want to get even. We want revenge, to hurt somebody, the same way they hurt us or worse. Therefore, we aren't thinking rational. That response will be too costly - there will be consequences to follow.

Within all of us, are our feelings. They come from deep within our spiritual being, called the Soul:
Feelings, of love, happiness, joy, strength, hope and positive thoughts. Those things become almost nonexistence in times of losses. The feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anger, fear, weakness, and negative thoughts, will push themselves to the front within the mind, and will overcome the strength that was always there, to find answers and fix problems by making rational decisions.

The majority of us, focus on the physical part of our beings. And take our Mental Health for granted. And never prepare ourselves to keep a healthy mind. In order to prevent psychosis, we have to work on our Mental Health daily. We have to keep looking for ways to strengthen our Mental Health, with the adequate nourishment and care. So that we will be able to maintain healthy mental and emotional responses to problems when they occur. This is Mental Hygiene.

There is another part of our being, that is called the soul. In that part of our makeup, we have to place  spiritual things, that will give us the ability to "Do the right thing," treating others the way we would like to be treated, being kind, doing good deeds, making the right decisions, using good judgment, putting priorities in the proper order and focusing closely on our health.

If the soul of a human being is unhealthy, then the mind is going to be unhealthy. And when mental trauma, occurs, and such individual look for strength within themselves, to fix their problems - they find they aren't strong enough. They loose the battle and become stressed. When the stress cannot be dealt with adequately, then depression set in, and when such an individual sinks into a deep depression, then psychosis will attack the mind - and can lead to suicide and murder of others. Next, I will talk about Mental Depression:

Mental Depression: A mental state characterized by dejection, lack of hope, and absence of cheerfulness. It is observed in Manic Depressive Psychoses.

Psychosis: (pertaining to the mind and soul) A condition manifested in the behavior, emotional reaction, and ideation of the  person. The individual has lost contact with reality, antisocial, shows abnormal behavior responses, and is unable to make righteous judgments.

Psychosis Manic - Depression: Unstable mood, sad and unhappy, can appear in any series of sequence alternating with periods of normalcy. But ordinarily are series where there are Psychotic Depression  or excessive well-being. Personality changes occurs.

*When we look into the depth of Mental Disorders, we find that they can become severe if not controlled:

Schizophrenia-A group of mental disorders characterized by disturbances in thinking, mood and behavior. An altered concept of reality and in some cases, delusions and hallucinations. Mood changes include  inappropriate emotional responses and loss of empathy, acts withdrawn, and regressive, bizarre behavior may be noted.

Simple Schizopherenic- The victim becomes dull emotionally, loses ambition and withdraw. There is no serious intellectual impairment.

Paranoid Schizopherenic- Develops extensive delusions of persecution. General characteristics are: sensitiveness, suspiciousness, jealousy, brooding, excessive self-consciousness, fixed ideas that develop into well-systematized logical delusions, megalomania (has the inability to distinguish between right and wrong)

Catatonic Schizophrenic-The victim is unresponsive. Has the tendency to assume and remain in a fixed posture, and refuse to move or talk. May show stereotyped excitement or stimulate a stupor, though lucid, and clearly recalls the episode if recovery occurs. A vague sense of being two personalities and of having changed occur.

Hebephrenic Schizophrenic- Often expresses childish behavior and mannerisms. Characterized  by bizarre, illogical and senseless thought processes and actions, delusions and hallucinations. Wild excitement one moment may be replaced by depression and crying, alternating with laughing hysterically often without cause and talking incoherently and excessively.

I decided to take you further into the deeper part of Mental disorders, to make the case for the importance of taking care of the whole body. There are many people who are suffering silently. These disorders could have been avoided, if they had received the proper help. There have to be a combination of help to cure Mental Disorders.
Help: Spiritual Counselling, Medical Treatment, Exercising, Nutrition, Finding a Hobby, Getting Out Of The House and engaging in things that treat the whole person.

I hadn't wanted to go this deep into Mental Disorders. However, I feel the need to, due to there are lots of individuals experiencing financial losses, loss of health, loss of their homes, and loss of marriages and other personal things of importance to them. I too have experienced losses. I understand how one can easily become a victim to stress. I wrote some of my own experiences in the book "How To Trust God When All Other Resources Have Failed"  I shared how I overcame the demons that robbed my sleep. and tried to destroy my life.  Chapter 14 - How to deal with stress.
